Sunscreens
Fail to Protect and May Harm
EWG sent
out a shocking report that had Coppertone, Neutrogena and
Banana Boat scrambling to refute the evidence that their
sunscreen products don't protect you and may be
harmful. According to EWG,
"Four out of 5 sunscreens don't give
the
protection you need,
blocking too little of the sun's harmful UV radiation, or
containing ingredients with significant safety concerns.
Leading brands were the worst offenders: None of market leader
Coppertone's 41 sunscreen products met EWG's criteria for
safety and effectiveness, and only 1 of 103 products from
Neutrogena and Banana Boat, the second- and third-largest
manufacturers, are recommended by EWG. This ground-breaking
research is based on nearly 400 peer-reviewed studies of the
17 sunscreen chemicals approved for use in the U.S. EWG's
scientists found that some popular sunscreen chemicals
actually break down when exposed to sunlight.
Other sunscreen ingredients penetrate the skin
and pose health concerns including allergic reaction, hormone
disruption and skin damage.
Here are EWG's top
picks:
- Keys Soap Solar Rx Therapeutic Sunblock
- Trukid Sunny Days Facestick Mineral Sunscreen UVA/UVB
Broad Spectrum
- California Baby Sunblock Stick No Fragrance (Lorna's favorite)
- Badger Sunscreen
- Marie Veronique Skin Therapy Sun Serum

I have said this for years, "let's protect our skin
from too much sun exposure. Wear a hat, a long sleeved shirt
and avoid the peak times where the sun's rays are too strong.
For children buy them UV rated clothing. There are several
companies making this great protective wear
www.nozone.ca and
www.solartex.com All of my
grandchildren wear this clothing throughout the summer."
If you do have to expose your skin then sunscreens
containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide appear to be the
least toxic and provide great UV protection. These ingredients
should not be made into nano particles (a new method of making
ingredients super small) as this can alter their safety. You
also do not want them in powder or spray form.
Is Your Fish Oil "GREEN"
When we take our
nutritional supplements everyday the last thing we think about
is whether or not they are "GREEN". For decades now I
have faithfully taken my fish oil supplement that is
molecularly-distilled and pharmaceutical grade from small
fishes. But a few years back I started asking was fish oil
part of a bigger environmental problem? Yes fish oil contains
EPA and DHA with important health benefits but at what
environmental cost? What I discovered had me searching for a
viable alternative and here's why:
According to the
International Fish meal and Fish oil Organization most fish
oil (over 80%) is used to feed fish in aquaculture. Fish oil
is essentially used in high technology aquaculture, such as
for salmon—as a substitute for fish meal. So yes we are
producing fish oil to feed fish in fish farms to make more
fish for human consumption and more fish oil. Less than 10% of
fish oil is produced for human consumption. The largest
producers of fish oil are Peru and Chile (accounting for 31%
and 13% of the world production respectively). More than 80%
of world production originates in 10 countries Peru, Chile,
China, Thailand, USA, Denmark, Iceland, Japan and Spain. Some
Norwegian fish oils actually originate in the Moroccan cities
of Tan Tan and Agadir. With the growing fish oil market for
both aquaculture and human consumption traceability of fish
oil becomes an important issue.
It is undisputed that
fish farming creates massive environmental concerns including
extremely high sea lice populations; the increased use of
pesticides in fish farm pens to control sea lice; antibiotic
use to keep overcrowded fish alive; and escapes of fish
species that are not indigenous to the area where they are
farmed.
Environmental
disaster—30,000 fish
escape a west coast fish farm
For example on July 3, 2008 another fish
escape from a west coast fish farm occurred near Campbell
River. Over 30,000 farmed salmon were released in the latest
fish escape now totalling over 120,000 fish escaping in the
last 6 months. The latest escape could not have come at a more
critical time with wild salmon returning to spawn in the
regions where the farmed fish escaped.
What do we do?
We need EPA and DHA to protect our heart, for healthy brain
and eye development, prevention and treatment of skin
diseases, arthritis, for immune function and more. For years I
have been searching for a plant source of EPA. We already have
a vegetarian algae source of DHA. After reviewing fatty
acid work by Dr. Chilton, Ph.D. on a novel plant
seed called Echium I knew I had to tell you about it. Echium
is found in my newest product called OmegaVega.
OmegaVega is beyond fish oil.
I say beyond fish oil because you get EPA and DHA in an
environmentally-friendly essential fatty acid rich oil
but you get GLA as well.
OmegaVega is truly
"Green" and it provides all the essential fatty acids you need
for optimal health.
Echium oil is an excellent
source of Omega 3, 6 and 9 polyunsaturated fatty acids
(especially stearidonic acid and GLA). Echium contains 15 to
30% stearidonic acid (SDA) which is readily converted to EPA.
No other plant oil contains high amounts of GLA, ALA and
easily provides EPA. OmegaVega a super fatty acid in the
refrigerator section of your health food store combines echium
and DHA from algae.
Why not just eat
Flax?
For decades a debate about whether flaxseed oil
could provide adequate levels of EPA. Flaxseed should never be
used for its EPA producing ability.
Flaxseed oil is a wonderful healing oil
but it
is not a source of EPA.
I use flaxseed oil everyday on salads and other foods but it is not the oil I use
for EPA and DHA. And research shows it is poorly converted to
EPA and that it provides absolutely no DHA. One study
published in the
American Journal of Clinical
Nutrition evaluated 45 healthy men and post menopausal
women (18 to 65). They all had normal cholesterol and were
asked to eat olive oil as their oil source. They were divided
into 3 groups. One got ALA (flax), SDA (echium) or EPA. Each
was given 750mg for 3 weeks and then 1,500mg for 3 weeks in a
supplement. Both the echium and EPA groups had significant
increases in EPA in red blood cells. There was no increase in
EPA in the ALA group. None of the ALA, SDA or EPA groups
showed significant increases in DHA. Which means that we must
supplement with DHA. The reason why the flax ALA group did not
have an increase in EPA in red blood cells was because of an
enzyme in the body that is need to convert ALA to EPA. This
enzyme called the Delta-6-desaturase if not working properly
stops the conversion of ALA to EPA. Echium contains high
amounts of SDA which bypasses the enzyme and easily allows the
manufacture of EPA as seen in this study. The Flax Council of
Canada states that Flaxseed has a limited conversion in
healthy people of up to 8 percent. New very sophisticated
studies are showing this is rare. The reasons why the
Delta-6-desaturase enzyme does not work and we can't convert
to EPA are as follows:
- Anyone with diabetes has a faulty delta-6 enzyme
- Viral infection
- Allergic disease
- High cholesterol
- Stress hormones
- Aging
- Menopause (menopausal women have been found to have an inactive enzyme)
- Alcohol
- Smoking
- Arachidonic acid
- Saturated fat
- Trans fatty acid consumption in the diet
- Nutrient deficiency of Zinc, B6, vitamin C

OmegaVega Beauty
Oil
Echium oil is derived from the seeds of a unique
member of the borage family of plants. Not only is Echium a
great source of EPA but it also contains high levels of GLA.
Stearidonic acid and GLA exist in high concentrations in
Echium oil. Stearidonic acid and GLA have powerful
anti-inflammatory properties. Both are excellent skin fatty
acids for preventing and treating eczema, psoriasis, wrinkles,
rashes and more. Research has confirmed that GLA-containing
oils have positive effects in breast cancer treatment; they
enhance lubrication in those with Sjogren's syndrome; help
relieve PMS symptoms, breast pain, skin conditions (including
eczema and psoriasis, and wrinkles), and attention-deficit
hyperactivity disorder in children; improve cardiovascular
health, mental health; and the list goes on.
Echium oil contains more GLA than evening
primrose oil per milligram, so people can
take less to get the same effect.
OmegaVega Protects
Breasts
A British study published in 2000
observed women who had locally advanced and metastatic breast
cancer (when cancer cells spread elsewhere in the body). They
found that women with breast cancer who were taking Tamoxifen
(a drug that blocks estrogen-receptor positive breast cancer)
and received GLA demonstrated faster clinical response
than those taking Tamoxifen alone. Study participants received
3 grams of GLA. The researchers concluded that GLA was a
useful adjunct to primary Tamoxifen treatment with no serious
side effects: "… this study suggests high-dose oral GLA to be
a valuable new agent in the treatment of hormone-sensitive
breast cancer."
OmegaVega
is an excellent source of high levels of GLA.
OmegaVega for Cholesterol Levels
Further echium research has found dosages
of 1.5 grams of SDA lowered total cholesterol and improved
good cholesterol levels. To read the full research article

Chilton author of the book
The Inflammation Nation
was one of the main contributors to this research using
echium.
OmegaVega Brain
food
DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is one of
the two important fatty acids in fish oils (the other is EPA).
Now we have OmegaVega with DHA in a vegetarian source
from algae without the environmental concerns found in fish
oil. DHA is essential for the proper functioning of the adult
brain, and for the development of the nervous system and
visual abilities. It is essential for smart babies too. DHA
research has shown it reduces the risk of heart disease.
The human brain is about 60% fat, and DHA is one of
the crucial structural fatty acids in both the brain and the
retina. Many vegetarians, vegans, and raw foods dieters are
also at risk of insufficient DHA unless they supplement
with DHA.
North American babies have much lower levels of
DHA than babies born in Asian countries. DHA
plays a role in our babies IQ. So if you want
a super smart baby use OmegaVega
OmegaVega is
a vegetarian fatty acid supplement containing echium and algae
DHA, providing EPA and DHA.
OmegaVega is a
superior fatty acid supplement because it also contains high
amounts of GLA. No need to use any other therapeutic oil when
you use OmegaVega. Great for children too! And pregnant moms
definitely need OmegaVega as most of the DHA mom has goes
to the developing baby. OmegaVega pours frozen so just put it
in your freezer for a delicious treat.

Snoring Have Your
Husband in the Guest Room? Terry, one of my
subscribers, wrote me a letter begging for help for her husband John.
She said, "If we can't get his snoring under control the
entire family is ready to send him to the garage to sleep. Her
sons slept in the basement two floors below their father's
bedroom but they could still hear him snore. Her next door
neighbor had to close their bedroom window in the summer
because they could hear her husband snoring at night."
