Sleep disorders affect over 70 million North Americans
Do You Need Help Sleeping?
According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, sleep disorders affect over 70 million North Americans. The problem has become so big that a tremendous amount of research dollars are being spent to find out why we aren't sleeping and how to correct it.
We live in a country that is virtually open for business 24 hours a day 7 days a week. With computers and televisions in our bedrooms it is hard for many of us to call it a day. Research has shown we need approximately 8 hours per night yet 70 percent of us are in sleep debt racking up far less. Chronic sleep deprivation not only causes us to feel groggy and lack concentration but insomnia causes some serious health disorders too.
There are many factors that contribute to poor sleep. We have a coffee shop on every corner and caffeine interferes with our ability to sleep. You could have a poor sleep environment where it is not dark enough in the bedroom disrupting our sleep cycle... or maybe you're sleeping with someone who snores. Shift work and traveling between time zones also disrupts sleep. Menopause and hormone changes in women are a big factor in female sleep problems. The most common reason we don't sleep is too much stress in our life and … Now obesity has also been found to disrupt sleep. With over 50 percent of North Americans classified as overweight and one third of those obese sleep problems are bound to increase.
Insomnia is the most common sleep complaint with most people reporting they can't fall asleep or they wake up frequently during the night and they can't get back to sleep. We all know that a good night's sleep is important but rarely do we think that poor sleep can cause some pretty serious diseases. The Institute of Medicine recently reported that there is a link between poor sleep and high blood pressure, diabetes, depression and even heart attack and stroke.
Scientists have also found our immune system does not fight viruses or bacteria as well when we are tired. A cancer prevention study found that those who sleep less than 7 hours a night had a higher risk of death. Car crashes and accidents on the job also occur when we are sleepy and even our intimate relationships can suffer from sleep deprivation.
Symptoms of sleep deprivation include having a hard time waking up or feeling like you need a nap in the afternoon. You may not feel alert and have poor concentration unless you load up on caffeine and other stimulants. You may be irritable, perform below your ability at work or school or others tell you that you look tired all the time.
I recommend SleepSense and/or HappySense
over prescription or over-the-counter medications for sleep problems.
Can't Fall Asleep?
I believe we should always reach for a product that is effective and safe for great sleep. This is the reason why I recommend SleepSense and/or HappySense over prescription or over-the-counter medications for sleep problems.
SleepSense is sublingual melatonin. Sublingual means it is absorbed under the tongue. So you put the tiny tablet under your tongue and let it dissolve at bedtime. Melatonin is extremely safe… so safe it has been researched in children with sleep disorders. We should call melatonin a breakthrough in inducing deep restful sleep without side effects. So if you are the person having a hard time falling asleep SleepSense is for you. Start by taking one tablet the first night, if you do not sleep soundly then take 2 the second night. You can go up to 3 tablets of SleepSense under your tongue at bedtime. If you take too much melatonin you feel groggy the next day so just cut back. Your body will not stop producing your own melatonin when you take supplemental melatonin nor will you become reliant on melatonin. I have been taking melatonin since I was 22 and I love it. Do not use melatonin that you swallow. It should be sublingual.
There are no side effects from melatonin... only benefits such as reduced rates of some cancers and deep restful sleep.
If you are relying on sleeping pills you should be very concerned about the side effects of these pills. Dizziness, drowsiness, and impaired coordination plus you can't drive or engage in any potentially dangerous activities while on sleeping pills. Alcohol should never be consumed with sleep drugs because it could be fatal. Prescriptions for these sorts of drugs are at an all time high and actually increased by 35% last year. In contrast melatonin has no side effects. It is safe and non-addicting.
New research shows adding 1000mcg of sublingual B12 makes your melatonin work better. Those who can't get to sleep at night may need vitamin B12. Studies show that B12 causes an earlier release of melatonin at night which resets the sleep-wake cycle. B12 acts directly on the pineal gland to provoke a faster release of melatonin. Research has also shown that B12 helps you get to sleep easier and it sensitizes you to morning light, which helps you wake up feeling refreshed, especially in the elderly who often have sleep problems.
Can't Stay Asleep … You need HappySense
Everyday stress is a normal part of modern living. Job pressures; family responsibilities; financial pressures; traffic, and time management are just a few of the constant stressors most of us are faced with on a daily basis.
Nearly 20% of adults in the U.S. use a drug to deal with the stress in their life. Stress creates high cortisol levels. Cortisol is our stress hormone and a lack of sleep creates a vicious cycle of elevated cortisol, no sleep and further elevations of cortisol.
HappySense with pure 5-HTP in an enteric coated form also helps you get deep restful sleep while keeping cortisol in check. HappySense enhances serotonin, our happy hormone. Healthy levels of serotonin helps the body deal with stressors leaving us with a feeling of relaxation and calm. HappySense is for those who can not stay asleep. You may fall asleep fine but wake up several hours later and lie wide awake for hours. Only use enteric-coated 5-HTP…never use 5-HTP that is not pure. Enteric coated pure 5-HTP does not cause nausea. Take 1 HappySense before breakfast, one before dinner and one at bedtime. If you have both types of insomnia where you can't fall asleep and you don't stay asleep follow the recommendations for HappySense and take one SleepSense under the tongue at bedtime. SleepSense and HappySense can be used together.
In addition to the recommendations above some women may also need 100mg of Prometrium, natural progesterone pills at bedtime too. Prometrium is a prescription drug of natural progesterone. Take 100mg at bedtime with a 5 day break every month.
Sleep is a time when your body recovers from the days events. Repair and regeneration take place during sleep. Without restful sleep we are at risk of health problems as we discussed earlier. If you don't get a good nights rest you can't perform well during the day. It is challenging to live our hectic lifestyle without sleep. Our relationships with others can suffer because we are grouchy too. Women during menopause need sleep and without it their body can't deal with all the hormonal changes. Sleeping pills aren't an option because of side effects. HappySense and SleepSense work fast... they safely put you to sleep, keep you asleep and help you wake up feeling refreshed and relaxed.
