Woman's Word Newsletter Print E-mail

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the first issue of the Women's Word my newsletter devoted entirely to women's health. Over the last five years I have had the opportunity to speak to millions through lectures, radio and television on everything from arthritis to uterine fibroids. I have such gratitude for the opportunity to do what I love—which is educating people on how to feel fabulous, vibrant and full of energy. Daily I talk to women and men who tell me they want simple answers to their health problems. They are tired of feeling sick and they realize the only way to get well is to take charge of their health.

Women have finally achieved equality according to the statistics prepared by the American Heart and Stroke Foundation—we have equal rates of heart disease to men but sadly more women are dying of heart attacks than men. Women's health statistics are startling. In 1960, one in twenty women developed breast cancer, today it is 1 in 8 women. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women between the ages of 35 and 54. One in four women have osteoporosis; of those that have a hip fracture as a result of osteoporosis 20 percent die; 75 percent of teenage girls are not getting the Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) of calcium in their diet to build nice strong bones. Fifteen percent of U.S. women have never had a Papanicolaou smear commonly called a PAP test to detect abnormal cervical cells, and 30 percent have not had a PAP test in the last three years; cervical cancer is epidemic. The largest group of women just turned 44 this year. This peri-menopausal group is concerned about preventing the symptoms of menopause especially since the Women's Health Initiative Study showed hormone replacement therapy to be a dangerous option for treating menopausal symptoms. Over 50 percent of women are overweight and 30 percent are dangerously obese. Women are living longer, well into our eighties, making prevention of the most common female health concerns essential. Adopt the following recommendations to ensure optimal health and prevent the most common female health concerns. Enjoy this issue of the Woman's Word.
